Chapter Fourteen:

The Early Worm Catches the Bird

Instead of rain drumming on the roof, I wake up the next morning to the sound of birds singing and a ray of sunlight streaming onto my pillow. I roll over and peek out the small window next to my bunk. For the first morning since we’ve got here, the sky is actually blue and there’s not a cloud in it. Perfect beach weather. But somehow I don’t think that’s on Sheila’s schedule.

“Time to get up, kids,” Nana calls from the kitchen.

“The day’s a-wasting,” Papa adds.

I climb out of bed and glance at the clock on the microwave. 7:15.

“It’s barely morning,” I say. “I thought we were on vacation.”

“The early worm catches the bird!” Papa says with a grin, pouring himself some coffee.

“Don’t you mean, ‘the early bird catches the worm’?” I say.

“Not today! We’re going birdwatching.”

“Birdwatching? Why can’t we go to the beach?”

“Let’s go to the beach!” Libby pokes her head over the edge of the top bunk. “I want to make a sandcastle! Can we bring Tiny, too?”

“Now, now,” Nana says. “There’ll be time for the beach later.”

“But later it’ll probably rain,” I grumble.

“Drew, please don’t argue. We’ve paid good money to go on a birdwatching tour this morning. It’ll be fun. You’ll see.”

Fun? Sitting still for hours waiting for birds to show up, just so you can look at them or maybe take their picture, doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun to me. I flop back on my bed and let out a loud groan. “I don’t feel so good.”

“What’s wrong?” Nana asks.

“I feel sick to my stomach. And my head aches.”

“Get the Buckley’s, Nana,” Libby says.

“The what?”

“The Buckley’s cough medicine. That’s what Mom does if we get sick. It seems to work really good on Drew. Sometimes he doesn’t even have to take it and he feels better.”

I groan again. Why does Libby always have to wreck everything? “I really don’t feel good,” I say and clutch my stomach.

“Well, I don’t have any Buckley’s. Let me get the thermometer.” Nana goes into the bathroom and comes out with an old glass thermometer. She sticks it in my mouth. “Don’t bite down on it.”

I nod and groan again.

“Come on, Drew,” Papa says, patting my leg. “It’s just a little birdwatching. And later we’re going to the Aquarium.”

“Promise?” It’s hard to talk with the thermometer in my mouth so it sounds more like “pwom-ith.”

“Yes, after lunch. We’re all going.”

“Yay! I want to go to the Aquarium!” Libby says, climbing out of her bunk and running to get dressed.

Nana checks the thermometer. “You don’t seem to have a fever. Maybe some breakfast will make you feel better.”

“Yeah, maybe.” I sit up. “We’re really going to the Aquarium?”

“Yes, Drew.”

“Y’know, I think I feel a little better now.”

Before we leave, I give Tiny a scoop of pellets and check that his cage door is firmly closed. Then I make sure I’m the last one out, so Libby can’t unlatch it before we go.
